The Digital Labs program aims to inspire youth innovation to create job opportunities. As model innovation centers, our Digital Labs are set to become state-of-the-art facilities strategically located in underserved communities across Uganda. Equipped with cutting-edge computers, high-speed internet, and specialized software, these labs will serve as hubs for hands-on learning, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and technological proficiency among youth aged 15-30. Through partnerships with local schools, NGOs, and tech companies, we aim to create inclusive spaces that empower participants to thrive in the digital economy. Whether you're a student in rural Jinja or an aspiring entrepreneur in Kampala, our labs will bridge the gap between potential and possibility.

Bridging Uganda's Youth Unemployment Gap

Uganda's youth bulge presents both a challenge and an opportunity: with over 75% of the population under 30 and approximately 700,000 young people entering the labor market annually, the country faces a pressing unemployment crisis. Recent data from the 2024 Census highlights a youth unemployment rate of 16.1% among those aged 18-30, while broader estimates suggest up to 121 million African youth (including Ugandans) could be unemployed or not in education, employment, or training by 2025. This gap is worsened by the digital divide, where limited access to technology leaves many youth unprepared for the 230 million digital jobs projected across Sub-Saharan Africa in the next decade.

Our Digital Labs are designed to address this crisis by equipping Ugandan youth with in-demand digital skills, transforming barriers into bridges for economic inclusion. Here's how:

1. Enhancing Employability in the Digital Economy

• Programs will focus on practical skills like software development, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, critical for roles in Uganda's growing ICT sector. Similar initiatives, such as MTN Uganda's Digital Literacy Program, have demonstrated potential, with over 4,795 youth trained since inception—many securing tech jobs or freelancing opportunities.
• By fostering productivity and innovation, these skills are expected to boost individual earnings potential and contribute to national GDP growth.

2. Promoting Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment

• Labs will host startup incubators where youth can develop apps, e-commerce platforms, or digital solutions for local challenges, like sustainable farming tools. This mirrors successful models like Tech Reach Africa's mobile labs, which have empowered 700 rural learners to launch ventures.
• With access to online marketplaces and financial tools, participants will tap into gig economies, creating self-sustaining businesses to address unemployment in regions like Bukedi, where 57% of youth have sought work for over a year.

3. Fostering Inclusive Growth and Social Mobility

• Prioritizing marginalized groups—women, rural youth, and persons with disabilities—our labs will ensure equitable access, aligning with ILO recommendations for digital inclusion to break poverty cycles. We aim for 50% female enrollment to counter gender disparities in employment.
• Long-term impact: By 2030, skilled youth could add billions to Uganda's economy through innovation in sectors like agriculture tech and e-health, reducing social risks tied to high unemployment.

In essence, our Digital Labs will turn Uganda's youth dividend into a powerhouse of progress, closing the unemployment gap one skill at a time once launched.
